Apple tv 4k color banding in dolby vision at 50/60hz with Hisense U8H

I’ve confirmed this in the gen 1, 2 & 3 4ks. Significant color banding/posterization in the Apple TV UI and displayed content (with match dynamic range and frame rate off).

This goes away in HDR10 and SDR modes, or if changing the refresh rate to 30hz or 24 for content with match frame rate enabled.

This doesn’t occur with same gear on my other UHD TV, but also doesn’t occur with non Apple TV sources. It’s something about the two devices.

I’m of course harassing Hisense about this, but they are blaming the ATV…

it seems the U8H does not switch the signal own it’s own. If you set the Apple TV 4K to output 4K SDR as default and enable match dynamic range + Match Frame Rate then the banding goes away. The same goes for the Roku 4K stick and I am sure you can set that on the Nvidia shield as well.

I have this issue with my Hisense U8H and Apple TV 4K. And after many attempts at different solutions, I find that turning on Match Dynamic Range & Match Frame Rate in Apple TV Settings greatly reduces the banding/posterization. The only slight pain is that the Apple TV goes blank for about 3-5 seconds every time you click on something to watch or exiting back to the menu. Even surfing YouTube, every time you click on a video, your screen and audio will go blank for a few seconds. My solution is to turn on matching only when I’m about to watch a movie that I don’t want banding. I really don’t care that much about it when watching YouTube videos. Hope this helps others too.

Update (in case someone out there finds this), I've spoken the Apple Support 3 times on this now (and Hisense 4 times, including an on-site visit!). Zero real progress, both point the finger at the other...

It seems impossible for Apple Support to handle these types of manufacturer-specific technical issues. They just don't have a process for getting the info on these types of problems to the engineering teams. Perhaps it there were 100s or 1000s of reports, a signal might get through.
