Loss of Internet Access After Deleting Norton Anti-Virus
I was increasingly annoyed by the Norton Anti-Virus flashing to be renewed so I deleted the app by dragging it to the trash bin and then emptying the trash -- BIG MISTAKE!
The next time I tried to log on to the Safari I got a message stating that I was not connected to the Internet. I checked my WiFi connection in Network and all was well but when I tried Safari again I got the same message. I tried Chrome and got the same "internet not available" message. Evidently, Norton left me a going away gift.
It took two days but I was able to solve this problem -- this is how I did it:
(1) Restart Mac Pro in "safe mode" by holding down the shift key prior to hitting restart.
(2) Once online in safe mode, go to Norton website and download "RemoveNortonMacFiles.command."
(3) Go to Systems Preferences on Mac Pro and click on "Security & Privacy" click on "General" -- you will see a notice "Allow Apps downloaded from:" Norton Anti-Virus and click on "allow to open" box.
(4) Run the "RemoveNortonMacFiles" app.
(5) Restart your Mac Pro and try to get on the Internet via Safari or Chrome (you may still be having a problem -- if so, go to "Network" in Systems Perferences and click on it -- you will see "WiFi" and it should have green globe with "connected" next to it. Look below the WiFi line and you should see "Norton Security" also with a green globe indicating it is still running.
(6) Click on the green globe next to Norton Security to change it to "Not Running."
(7) Restart your computer.
That should fix the problem. I am using a 2017 Mac Pro running macOS Monterey. One thing that I left out of my description above was that I did download an App Cleaner & Uninstaller from Nektony. I don't believe you have to do that but the App Cleaner did remove remnant of Norton files that were hidden on my Mac Pro.
I hope this is helpful.
