Perhaps the battery has run down. Put the iPod on charge. After a short time, you should see the battery indicator appear on the screen, but it will turn off again while it's charging.


To turn on an iPod that has fully powered off (either due to the battery running down or because someone fully turned it off), press-and-hold the power button for a few seconds, until the screen shows signs of life.
