Find My remote erase confirmation email

I lost my iPhone running iOS 15.3.1 and immediately activated lost mode and then proceeded to erase my iPhone via the Find My app on my iPad. After a day of “pending erase” I got an email saying that “iPhone is being erased”. Does this mean the iPhone has been erased or will I receive another confirmation email from Apple about this? Is it possible that whoever had my iPhone and started it up, switched it off during the erase process the moment it started? I’m a little worried my data is still on there. I could still track it via the Find My phone app but there were no other options (like ping the phone, erase, etc.) except “remove device” anymore after receiving that email.
