i cannot update my mac because there issnt enough disc space

If there is not enough space on your HD then the next logical step is to free up memory (i.e. delete programs that take up a lot of space and after the system install, reinstall the programs. Or, purchase an inexpensive external hard drive and store all of your "stuff" there.) Hope that helps.
