Voice memos recording errors

Good morning. In the last couple days I have encountered errors with the Apple voice memos app that are cutting off my recordings when they are made and keeping me from recording full conversations. I have used the app to make recordings without problem for several years now but suddenly there are issues this week. I'm not sure if the app was recently updated. If so there is clearly a bug in the update, but I can't delete the app and reinstall it because I would lose all my old recordings. My iOS and the app are both up to date.


Here's a more detailed description of the problem:

At the end of a recording when I go to stop the recording, the pause button is there but not the stop button. Pausing the recording won't allow me to return to the main list of recordings, and the pause button does not behave normally. At this point, the app shows the full recording time but when I go to rename the recording file, the recording suddenly truncates the file taking a 30 minute conversation and only leaving the first few minutes of it. Restarting the app and the phone don't do anything to help. The rest of the recording is simply gone.

I can't tell if the error in the file is occurring when the phone screen auto locks, but the phone settings won't let me extend the auto lock function beyond 5 minutes so there is no way to test whether keeping the phone from locking would prevent the problem.


I would appreciate any advice on fixing the problem beyond updating the app and iOS because those are already up to date. Can anyone tell me if the app was updated this week? Is anyone else having similar problems with it? Will another update to the app be issued soon? If no fix is immediately available, I'll be forced to turn to third party recording apps.

We'd be happy to help out! We're not aware of any issue with the Voice Memo app like you've described, but we'll be happy to see what might be causing this behavior for yourself.


To clarify, are you only noticing this issue when changing the name of your recordings or does this happen even if you don't rename the file?


Also, have you checked to ensure you have plenty of storage space available? If not, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and ensure your memo isn't getting truncated due to lack of space.

I have more than 12GB of storage available on this phone so that doesn't seem to be an issue. To answer your question, the app isn't behaving normally even before I rename the file. The stop button isn't available to stop the recording -- only a pause button and when I pause the recording the app doesn't take me back to the full list of "All Recordings" like it typically does. In one case, I had to force quit the app to get back to the list of all my recordings, and the memo was truncated at that point. In the other cases, the full recording appeared to be there until I renamed the file.
