The camcorder driver for USB video transfer comes preinstalled on the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft® Windows® 10, Windows® 8/8.1, Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Windows XP
  • Apple® Macintosh® OS version 9.1 and higher

Immediate issue is "and higher " on macOS 9.1 which is unknown to me

External camera is Sony Digital Model DCR-TRV480 and was detected in iMovie prior to12.3 update. Is identified in system hardware. Based on other postings by me and others I am quite confident the 12.3 update is the problem. I am relatively new to this with limited experience and my main interest is iMovie productions with external camera input. No third party Manufacturers involved.I notice some postings to the effect external monitors also not being detected since the update? My camera is not listed as a supported camera along with many others but has always been detected .Thanks for responding.

The Sony camera is about 30 years old. I have been using it for some time in iMovie with no issues. I notice a few others who made posts are using much newer cameras than mine. I'm connected to iMac via Firewire/Thunderbolt cables usb-c. I see there are post indicating usb-c may have been have been the problem detecting external monitors? May have nothing to do with my problem but I am grasping at anything that might possibly indicate a solution. One other thing I did was I download other software similar to iMovie and once again the camera was not detected so that would seem to eliminate iMovie is not the problem. Really appreciate you help.

There seems to be an issue with 12.3 and importing from Firewire cameras, both DV and HDV.

There are a few threads on the Final Cut Pro forum. It appears to be 12.3 that is causing it, and apparently neither Quicktime Player, iMovie or FCP are able to import from these tape cameras in 12.3.

A temporary workaround may be to install an older OS on a separate drive or volume.

I am not experienced enough to do what you are suggesting although I am sure it would work. I can wait to get a permanent fix but do you think Apple would eventually correct it? I did report it via "Apple unsolicited idea submission Policy" as some one had suggested. Do know if there are other ways I could get the message to Apple? Thanks
