iPhone 7+ Can Not Send or Receive SMS Texts To/From Android or Businesses

After an iOS update in January, 2022, my friend with an iPhone 7 can no longer text Android phones, nor receive texts from Android phones or businesses and other entities sending SMS messages, like from mortgage lenders, as an example. SMS is enabled, as is MMS. Her phone is also set to Send texts by both her telephone number and her Apple ID. Her carrier is Verizon and her iOS is updated o 15.3, as of today

Can anyone suggest a solution to this situation? She is contemplating moving over to an Android phone if this cannot be resolved.

Regards,

Shane

Hi ShaneJK,

Our page If you can't send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is the best place to start if you cannot send or receive messages on an iPhone. The first things to check are:

  1. Restart your device:
  2. Check your network connection.
  3. Check with your carrier to see if the type of message you’re trying to send, like MMS or SMS, is supported.
  4. If you’re trying to send group MMS messages on an iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and turn on MMS Messaging.
  5. Make sure that your device has enough space to receive images and videos.
  6. Make sure that you entered the correct phone number or email address for the contact.

If messages to other Apple devices work but not SMS, confirming with the cellular carrier (step 3) may be necessary as SMS is a cellular account feature required for that type of messaging. You can learn more about the difference at What is the difference between iMessage and SMS/MMS?

Regards.

ShaneJK,

Thank you for keeping us posted.

We recommend that you update the device to iOS 15.4.

While it isn't inherently assured that an update will resolve the issue, updating to the latest software version for your device can help isolate potential software issues.

Kindly secure a backup and update.

Next, we recommend that you check for any carrier updates.

Hi Bill T1,

Thank you for the kind reply! Unfortunately, I have performed all these steps prior to posting on the apple discussions forum, without the desired effect. She has both Verizon coverage, as well as WiFi coverage. This issue started back in January, after one of the iOS system updates. Verizon hasn't been able to help. In fact, they got access to her phone remotely and couldn't make things any better. I am recommending to my friend that she goes to a Genius Bar and have them run diagnostics on the phone to see if they can determine what needs to be corrected.

Very Best Regards,

Shane
