'Your Password required for touch ID' keeps popping up on when on Screen Saver

Hello, the last couple of days - whilst my computer is inactive and on Screen Saver mode - the home screen keeps appearing asking: 'Your Password is required for touch ID'.

I have my Screen Saver set for two hours, and on a picture folder, before turning off - I'm not sure if it's when the two hours is up or during as I've not been timing it (yet!). There is no real problem as I just sign back in again - but I was wondering if it's indicative on any sort of software/hardware problem or someone else trying to access my computer (there isn't anyone else in the house, btw)???

It's happened three times now in about 36 hours; so I thought I'd better find out...

I'm on a MacBook Air (Retina 13-inch 2020)

Thanks in advance,

MacBook Air (2020 or later)

Hi there, TheBaronOfFratton,

We see you're having some trouble with Touch ID on your MacBook Air. The steps below, from the Apple Support article If Touch ID isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support, guide you through troubleshooting an issue such as the one you described:

Try using Touch ID after each step:

1. Make sure that you have the latest version of macOS.
2. Make sure that your fingers and the Touch ID sensor are clean and dry.* Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe off any dirt or debris on the Touch ID sensor.
3. Your finger should cover the Touch ID sensor completely. While Touch ID is scanning, you shouldn't tap too quickly or move your finger around.
4. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, then click the lock  to make changes. Click Login Options, then make sure that Automatic login is off.
5. Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Touch ID, then make sure that "Unlocking your Mac" or "iTunes Store, App Store & Apple Books" is on, and that you've added one or more fingerprints.
6. Try to add a different fingerprint.
7. For Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, turn your keyboard off and on, then connect your keyboard to your Mac with the USB to Lightning cable. After you turn Magic Keyboard off then on, Touch ID may be unavailable for up to 10 seconds.
8. Restart your Mac.

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, TheBaronOfFratton, and that additional info, it really helps! Next, try running First Aid on your hard drive with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct simple issues like you're experiencing.

You can figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

Hello TheBaronOfFratton,

Thanks for the clarification on the issue.

We've found this info:

"Start or stop the screen saver on your Mac
The screen saver automatically starts whenever your Mac sits idle for the amount of time you specified in Screen Saver preferences. If you set up a hot corner for the screen saver, move the pointer over the corner to immediately start the screen saver."

This is found in Use a screen saver on your Mac. You'd want to check  System Preferences> Desktop & Screen Saver >Screen Saver to see how long this might be when the Mac is idle and Screen Saver begins.

Another place to check would be the sleep and wake settings:Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac. When using this guide, you'd want to use the steps included in "Specify sleep and wake settings for a Mac notebook computer" as it will guide you to all the ways to adjust this setting and allow you to enjoy your music without interruptions.

Let us know if this helps out!

Kind regards.

Thanks for the reply. The problem isn't with Touch ID though, that works fine. It's just that I keep randomly being kicked out of my MacBook and have to sign back in again with my password and Touch ID for NO reason. It is still happening - 6 times now and it can happen at any time when the computer is on screen saver mode.

I am on the latest MacOS (Monterey 12.2.1) and have had this MacBook Air Retina, 13-inch 2020 for 18 months and this hasn't ever happened before until a few days ago.

I just had Music on, and a remote speaker in another room, which just stopped and I realised it had happened again. If it means anything, when I sign back in all the windows and applications I have open come back on EXCEPT Music?

Anyway, it's very irritating and I can't find anything else about it on the forums.

Thanks again, and any help is much appreciated.

Hello, I've not changed the parameters of my Screen Saver for years. I have it set for 2 minutes of inactivity and then to go to sleep after 2 hours - I've never had any problem with that before.

What has changed is that suddenly - when in Screen Saver mode - I will be kicked out of my MacBook and told: 'Your Password is required for Touch ID' will appear and I will have to sign back in. If music or video is running on an external device that will stop too. When I sign back in all windows are still on what they were on except Music, which I will have to click back on to open.

MacOS is up-to-date, nothing else has changed recently.

Thanks in advance again,

Thank you for the help, I had to leave my reply for a few days to see if it worked or not - unfortunately it didn't!

I was watching a saved video on my television through my Apple TV this morning and it suddenly stopped. I thought the internet had gone down, it hadn't and then I saw my computer screen and it had 'locked' again with this same message. Signed back in and resumed with no problem but it is STILL happening regardless.

Any other ideas?

In the meantime I'll set up and try a new user account - but it's hard to test as it happens randomly and it's been 48 hours since it last happened.

Thank you both for the replies. *Salute*

The 'Require Password' box was unticked anyway - I've never used that as it wasn't necessary. I've changed the password too in case that made any difference (it didn't!!!).

I did contact 'Get Support' and they told me to do a MacOS reinstall, which I have, but - again - it hasn't made any difference. Well... Now, when the message comes up, the screen is the "Monterey purple" screen as opposed to my desktop picture if that means anything?

Also 'Music' doesn't come back on once I've entered my password - everything else that was open does; again, if that means anything?

It didn't do it at all over the weekend, but it's done it twice today. I'm running the most recent software updates. Any other ideas would be much appreciated...

Thanks again,
