I DON'T SEE ANY AUDIO INPUT OR OUTPUT DEVICE OPTIONS IN MY SOUND SETTINGS

my MacBook just lost sound. i thought it was muted. i went to settings to reset it only to find that no audio input/output devices is listed under the audio settings including in-built sound devices.

what do i do?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.13

I have the same problem, tried safe mode but no joy. I have a Macbook Air early 2015 running Big Sur, the issue happened out of nowhere, was watching something on you tube, closed my laptop then 3 hours later there was no input or output detected in sound preferences, tried a few fixes suggested but no luck , what is going on? Don't have enough space to reinstall OS...
