Ringtone will not change

I have a custom ringtone assigned to a contact. Sometimes it does not ring properly so I have tried to change it to my default ringtone or anew tone I have purchased. The contact info shows the changes, but when the contact rings me all I get is the original faulty tone. I have restarted phone etc., but the changed tone shows as being altered but still plays the old tone.
