macbook air trouble logging in

When I enter my password or use the touch button, instead of home screen opening, I get black with a cursor . HELP!

My MacBook Air is stuck on the login page I am trying to login on my MacBook Air I enter my password and now a small toolbar loading line comes up but only goes so far across and then stops so I cannot go any further hope this makes sense

Logging on to my MacBook Air When I enter my password the password entry area just bounces on the screen and I can't get any further. This has been happening for a while now but if I let it sit for a bit it normally works. Today it's been more than an hour. Can anyone help please?
