Fcpx on the new mac mini

Hello!

I have a general question about using Final Cut Pro X on the new Mac Mini M1. I’m using my refurbished 2013 Mac Pro (trash can) which has been great but is finally showing it’s buggy old age. I’m considering replacing it with a new Mac Mini. I don’t expect to cut long form, feature-length projects with it, but certainly short films. 10-20 min with separate DME tracks. I’m also not big on proxies so would hope it can handle full res video.

Anyone with experience to share? I would very much appreciate the input before buying. Don’t think I want to go full on with the new Mac Studio yet (tho it looks pretty awesome).

The Mac mini should be fine. I don’t know what your full resolution video is, but if you need external storage get an SSD with a Thunderbolt correction.

I have a basic 2012 Mac mini and have had no problems editing 4K natively.

The M1 Mac mini should fly . . . take a look at all the numerous reviews on YouTube for the past year or so.

Thanks for your reply. Very helpful. I would think given virtually everything can shoot 4K now I would hope the mini would be able to handle it natively. Do you have any experience running that hi res on the mini?

Ian,

That's great news for me. Thanks for sharing. If yours is still pushing 4K just fine, you're right, the M1 should crank with no problems, at all. Getting a new desktop is going to mean new everything else; mouse, screen, hub, external storage, all of which will be affordable given the savings on the mini.

I don’t have a Mini. The computer is fast enough, mostly likely without knowing the specifications like codec and format. Drive speed is crucial as well, especially as the cop k off the timeline increases.
