Photo Booth no longer records video

I have a MacBook Air (M1, 2020). Soon after getting this machine I noticed that Photo Booth could snap photos but not take video. I've used this app on my previous Macs without problems. I ignored it, then later (several updates later) I noticed Photo Booth was able to record video. Now it has stopped again.

I can still snap a shot in camera mode, but when the countdown begins in video mode the frame freezes. At 0:00 counter the feed goes black and records an empty unplayable video file.

My gut says, uninstall this glitchy piece of software and reinstall. Can't make that happen. File won't be thrown out. Makes me want to drop it off my roof.

Yes, the software is up to date.

No, no other apps are running or interfering.

No, I haven't ever used or installed any other camera or camera app or used an external camera.

Yes, I have restarted my machine.

Please:

  • tell me why I can't throw it out like I want to.
  • tell me how I can fix the problem.
  • tell me this machine is as lightweight as it feels and I should proceed with the roof remedy.

The Photo Booth app is incorporated in macOS and can't be deleted. However, you can reinstall macOS, which could conceivably fix whatever is wrong with it: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support.

You might also try restarting your Mac in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. That might not fix anything either, but sometimes it resolves problems too difficult or tedious to diagnose. Try that first.

Throwing your Mac off a roof definitely won't fix anything.
