new 5th gen - cant pair remote

Bought my first Apple product - 5th gen Apple TV from Apple store on amazon.

Have charged remote for an hour using supplied lightning cable and Apple plug.

Apple TV boots up ok, and asks me to press remote which I can and responds fine.

Then it asks to “pairing your remote, make sure that the remote is charged, in range and ready to pair”

Have the remote on top of Apple TV and nothing happens.

Have been through the various steps to power off/on, hold back and volume up, but nothing seems to let me get past this screen. Any ideas?

Do I need to return this or am I missing something?

Left it overnight charging with an apple wall plug and the supplied lightning cable

Thank you for the confirmation. Looking good.

Someone is now telling me I need to make sure my TV remote needs to be next to the Apple TV? Have tried that as well, but no difference.

I believe the video showed that, yes.

Still cant pair.

When you do everything right and it still doesn’t work as it is supposed to, then I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

THIS IS NOT THE SOLUTION, HOW DO I UNDO?

Unfortunately, when the OP marks a post as Solved, then that is final on this forum.

Have charged remote for an hour using supplied lightning cable and Apple plug.

Please verify that you charged correctly. No “Apple plug” is provided in the box.

Charge your Siri Remote - Apple Support

The Siri Remote takes about 2.5–3 hours to fully charge (but 30 minutes should be enough for initial functionality). For charging, connect the lightning cable to a computer’s USB-A port, or to a USB power adapter in an AC socket. You might use an iPhone/iPad power adapter, but you said the Apple TV box was your first Apple product.

Still cant pair. TV does seem to recognise me pressing buttons on remote, as the 'press the center button.." responds straight away.

Work supplied me a iPhone SE, so ATV is the first product I have purchased
