I saved several photos I received via Messenger by clicking the down arrow next to the picture and received a check when complete but can not find them in any folder. All of this was done on my MacBook Pro

When you Control (right) - click on a photo in a Messages message the only option you get is to add it to your Photos Library:
You can also Control (right) - click on the photo and drag it to the Desktop or any folder you'd like.
They usually go to the Photos app. If you where not prompted with a "Save to" window, you'll find them in there.
Where do the photos get saved when you download them from Messenger on your MacBook Pro?
