re-download offline again issue

when using iTunes in 10.12.6, i have downloaded Apple music offline, however i have seen errors where iTunes is not responding correctly and must be forced closed.

When i re-launch, iTunes thinks i need to redownload albums again even though their on local storage,

albums in iTunes appears with "cloud" icon, and location is Apple music, yet i can fine those same albums on hard drive as .m4p files..

When i click "Downloaded" in iTunes, its blank. wasn't before i quit.

See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash - Apple Community for more on recovering a damaged library. Did you check for hidden files? Would anything in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder be better than starting completely from scratch? Are there Time Machine backups you haven't considered? Play count and metadata should be captured in the cloud library so should restore when you're signed into Apple Music.

Hi Tech198,

When you're restarting iTunes on your Mac, are you logging out beforehand? The reason we ask is that it's expected behavior for any downloaded content from Apple Music to be removed from the device when you sign out. When you sign back in, the content would need to be downloaded again.

If you aren't signing out and are using iTunes on macOS Mojave, the user guide below will help you determine if there could be multiple iTunes libraries on the Mac.

Change where your iTunes files are stored on Mac

If these steps don't help, please let us know which version of macOS is currently installed and we'll work from there.

All the best.

When you force quit iTunes you run the risk of the database not being updated properly. Check for hidden .tmp files in your iTunes folder and remove them. Option start-iTunes and make sure it is using the iTunes Library.itl file in your main iTunes folder. You cannot import any locally stored Apple Music content that isn't currently connected to the library. It must be redownloaded and authenticated by iTunes. The library needs to be closed cleanly for these items to play from local storage next time you start iTunes.

ok,,, When i force quit iTunes it did change the file .itl file to (Damaged)" "unknown file type" i figue the "link" was broken.

and re-created new one..

I then tried renaming empty one to .bak and rename "damaged" one back to .itl, and relaunched iTunes again, but it kept going over the same process..

There was no .tmp files.

So i just decided the only way was to start fresh and re-download music By changing damaged file back to .itl i was expecting the "link" to be repaired.... and offline music would just show up... Didn't happen.

I was playing at the time i needed to force close, so i know any music offiline would have been intact itself even if the library could not be updated...

I was hoping play count, meta data at the least only.,..

It happened a 2nd time but i learnt a lesson. I did have a backup .it file while i restored, but it didn't make a difference...

Maybie with locally important songs it would have not with Apple music offline songs..

oh well... another re-download then.. This is getting annoying.

I can understand keeping a backup, when it works, but it seems this is a big exception for offline music. Why ? A backup in that case is useless. I can understand Apple's view of it being toes to an account and that is fine for authentication, but you know its you doing it, that's when it becomes a problem..

The side of things that protect miss-use are also the same rules that break stuff from a genuine perspective as well.

This is one of those cases.

I actually tried this with some locally imported songs, just to see if the same would happen when *I* Force quit, and i could not reproduce the issue ... Then i figured, "there is probably a difference between a user force quitting a working app vs an app that is completely non-responsive anyway"

oh well. I'm sure i did everything correct...
