why did outgoing audio suddenly cease working when I joined a new meeting. I could hear them but they couldn't hear me.

Zoom software may not have the permissions needed to provide microphone input.
System preferences > Security & privacy > Privacy
click the lock and authenticate to unlock.
check camera and microphone in the list, and make sure Zoom is the list allowed to access.
