@ku4hx is correct for the unibody MacBooks (late 2009 to 2010). However, if you have a 2006 to Mid 2009 non-unibody MacBooks with a removable battery, then the serial number is located on a sticker in the battery bay. Just remove the battery.

Edit: If it is the unibody MacBook, then sometimes the serial number become rubbed off since it is imprinted onto the rubber bottom case. If the unibody MacBook ever had the Bottom Case replaced, then there will be no serial number visible on the external bottom case. In theory, the serial number should have been marked by an Apple repair tech on the inside of the Bottom Case. On some older Macs, there may be a sticker on the Logic Board memory slot which sometimes listed the system serial number as well, but I don't recall if the unibody MacBooks did this.

Remove the battery and try powering on the laptop. Without the battery it may be a bit harder to power on the laptop. You may need to press the power button several times, or you may need to hold the power button for another second. A completely discharged or bad battery can prevent an Apple laptop from powering on.

Of course a non-unibody MacBook is very old and won't be useful for much while running macOS since it will be too old to get online as all of the current browsers require macOS 10.12 or newer. If the laptop powers on, then you may be able to run Linux Mint on the laptop which would give you a current non-Apple OS with access to the popular web browsers (Firefox, Google Chrome, Vivaldi) and free open source software such as LibreOffice. I was able to successfully install & "use" Linux on an aluminum MacBook 2009 with just 2GB of RAM (was able to open two browser tabs). Linux works best with 4GB of RAM, but can be "used" with as little as 2GB. Don't use Linux with the 2006 MacBook as it may brick the laptop due to faulty system firmware (Linux will be Ok for the 2007+ models).

As for recycling, here is an Apple article:

Using External Devices: Try Resetting the SMC and NVRAM, but this time, using an external keyboard. Connect an external monitor and see if you get an output.
