How to fix this? I've tried setting the auto lock to never. Didn't help. Next I tried to reboot my iphone. Didn't help. Next, I tried closing all applications & rebooting, didn't help. Next I tired deleting the iphone music app then rebooted, then reloaded the music app, didn't help.
I'm at a loss now of what to do. Thought maybe I need to update my software, no go. I'm current. Any suggestions????

You should be able to access the Control Center from the Lock Screen and continue playing music. Is this something that has recently started, or has never worked?
When your screen locks, try accessing the Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner. Do you see the option to continue to play music? If not, see Use and customize Control Center on iPhone for details on how to add music control.
If you still are unable to play music after tapping play, reach back out to us.
