Apple Watch emojis

I no longer have the capability to use emojis when responding to text messages on my series 6 watch. What happened to them?

They are there.

When you go to reply to or send a new message. Tap in the box where you would enter your message

Then on screen that opens tap on the icon on the bottom left side.
