emojis in imessage on apple watch 6?

even though I have emojis as one my keyboards defined on the iphone it doesn't appear as one of the apple watch keyboards and thus I'm not able to quickly respond to imessages with an emoji on the watch. latest iOS on both iphone and apple watch (and it has worked seamlessly in the past) and watch set up to basically mirror iphone settings - any suggestions?

It is still there.

Tap in the reply box like you would to type.

Then tap the bottom left hand corner icon
