MBP Mid 2014 Mojave, should I go for Big Sur?

Hello everyone,

Knowing that Big Sur is the last upgrade my MBP Mid 2014 will get, I wonder if I should upgrade. I have been using Mojave and have no issues, my Mac runs smoothly on it. Are there any reasons why I shouldn't upgrade? Should I stay on Mojave until it becomes obvious I need a new Mac?

What is your opinion/advice on the matter?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi,

Pros to upgrading: Security updates as a reason to upgrade has already been mentioned; I don't think it can be overstated. Eventually Safari and other browsers only compatible up to Mojave will not be able to access more and more websites.

Cons to upgrading: 32 bit apps and perhaps some peripherals will not run on Big Sur. You'll have to go through the process of backing up and upgrading.

You'll have to decide which is more important to you, but eventually you're going to have to upgrade/replace apps anyway. I'd upgrade (and did, under similar circumstances).

Caution - jumping over all the newer versions and directly to Big Sur  / Monterey on Qualifying computers is Technically possible - there are those who have attempted and were successful.

Then there are those who attempted and had less than good results.

If this is a Production or Mission Critical Set-up - a more prudent and measure approach is suggested.
