Voice over not recording on Keynote

When I attempt to add a voice over to my keynote presentation the actual audio does not record. When I playback the presentation the slides advance but there is no sound. Yes, my mic is connected. Yes, the green audio bar moves up and down as I talk during the recording. Yes, I pushed the red button for record and waited until the countdown to completed before recording. Everything is up to date. I've tried closing keynote and restarting my computer without any results.

This used to happen to me every now and then over the past two years (I make several recordings a week). During those times I would close and reopen the presentation and successfully re-record with audio. Now that doesn't even work.

To clarify, are you following the steps in the section, "Record a voiceover narration", as shown here: Record audio in Keynote on Mac

If so, be sure to press Esc to save the recording and exit the presentation.

You've completed some great troubleshooting steps. If the issue persists, we suggest completing these steps to further isolate the issue:

• Verify if the issue occurs in safe mode. Your Mac will load slow and your screen may flash. This is normal while in this mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

• Check to see if the issue occurs in a new user account. This allows you to determine if it is specific to your account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

None of these suggestions have helped. I am following the instructions on how to record audio in Keynote and have probably recorded close to 100 in the past without problems. However the no audio is a problem that has been happening off and on over the past two years and is occurring more often now. Within those two years I was also using an older MacBook and had the same problem.

The issue did not occur in the safe mode and changing user accounts didn't make a difference.
