Massive cache attributed to CloudKit

Hi,

I just got a notification on my Macbook that's about a month old saying that I've run out of space on the 1tb disk. Only had a gig left over.

I found the file called: tmpm-0x000000000000001b under the Cloudkit folder in a folder called MMCS. When I Googled I saw CloudKit has something to do with iCloud. But I only have a few doc in my iCloud Drive and the rest id Photos, which uses about 200gig. I doubt it has anything to do with the photos as the Photos app is said to download all files and I can see the Photos library at around 200 gig in my Pictures Folder. Having run out of space I deleted tmpm-0x000000000000001b in the MMCS folder in the Cloudkit folder and restarted and started typing this message. While I was doing that the file grew to over 100gig and it's not downloading it, I only have a 25mb internet connection. Any ideas where this is coming from or how to fix it?

What is also interesting is that If I click get info on the file the size is different than in the finder and every time I check it grows: https://share.milkmoonstudio.com/9ZumDxwo

I am having the same issue I also narrowed it down to the caches folder while on the phone to apple support and they actually recommended to delete the whole folder that was the culprit. When we looked at the size under Get info it was 94GB but when we deleted it, it freed up about 300GB which is bizarre.

Deleting the folder fixed it for a while but now the issue is happening again, I believe it is to do with iCloud trying to automatically download files to the mac, which is a feature that I hate anyway.

They suggested if the problem persists to reinstall the OS, but I’d like to avoid that if possible.

So did exactly the same thing, clean install, then timemachine backup restored. Less than a day later the folder ballooned again. Gave up, formatted, did a clean install, not timemachine restore and now things are fine.

I have the same problem on a 2020 MBP but used daisy disk to locate the file at the the below location. I did a fresh install of Monterey 12.3.1 and then a restored from time machine backup. With in a day the location below blew-up to 1.2 tbs in size leaving me with just over 8 gb's of free space on my drive. In the MMCS folder are three other files all starting with temp-0x00... I will try deleting them and reinstalling.

I just tried a clean install, no Time Machine backup and less then a day latter the same cache file is over 700gb and growing. I contacted apple support via chat and they told me that someone would call me. ...... that was about two hours ago and still no phone call. The bad news is that it seems like no-one at apple support had any clue what was wrong.
