Lost Iphone played sound - but is dead?

My iphone is lost and was last marked as out of battery on Find My iPhone. I’ve tried many times to “Play a sound” but I know for sure that the battery is dead (black screen on Find My)

Last night I received an email from Apple that a sound was played around midnight. I had run to check Find My but the phone was still seeing black and the last known location/date was not changed.

Is it possible for a phone to “Play a Sound” and Find My to not update location? ie removal of SIM card or? The phone HAS to have been charged in this situation right?

Correct. The email is generated once the device successfully plays the sound; which necessitates power. If it was found, someone may have plugged it in and unplugged as soon as the sound played.

Yes, it's possible to not update quickly enough. If you know the approximate location, I'd look around there. Check lost and found, local stores, or the police. At some point, you just have to give up.

Darn! So is it possible for Find My to not update the location fast enough in that instance?

It just concerns me because it’s still in the last known location - I don’t know if I should give up at this point :(
