What can be safely moved from /users directory on Mac?
I like to move as many of my working files out of /Users/.../ as possible to presumably keep it safer than all stored on the SSD of my Mac— email archives, photos, document archives, etc.
Can all of my documents be moved out of ~/Documents to wherever I like?
How much other stuff can move away? The Photos Library? Music files? iCloud? Movies? ~/Pictures? Mac Mail folders?
I want to keep my home directory on my SSD, but I want it to be as small as possible, but I don’t know what can and cannot be moved outside of the home directory and will leave me with a working setup.
I am confident that things like ~/Library cannot be moved, but it seems awful if I can’t move storage hogs like the Photos library somewhere else. However, I don’t want to experiment when I would expect that there should be some formal guidance from Apple.
It’s been quite difficult to search on something like this. In the Unix world, a query about the "Unix filesystem” immediately addresses the question of how one organizes files across multiple physical storage devices, but such a question about MacOS leads predominantly to discussions of APFS versus HFS+, etc, which is totally off topic.
Is there some sort of reliable resource (i.e., a Mac Users Manual or Apple documentation) that I could use to figure this out as I prepare for the arrival of my new Mac Studio?
Thank you!
