Why did our 3-week-old M1 2021 iMac "panic" reboot upon booting this morning?

This morning, our 3-week-old M1 2021 iMac rebooted immediately after I entered my password after starting the iMac this morning. The Problem Report started with "panic(cpu...". We are on Monterey 12.3.1.

First, a single kernel panic is not the end of the world and generally is nothing to be concerned about. If a pattern of KP's starts to develop then you have cause for concern.

Your EtreCheck report looks pretty good, the only thing I would recommend is uninstalling all HP software as it is redundant and HP has a long history of poorly writing apps for Mac OS. In short there is no need for any of their apps. Mac OS tends to do everything their apps already do.

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

Allan Jones,

Thank you for your suggestions. I removed the old Internet Plug-Ins as well as the Growl application, none of which I need.

Yes, I recognize now that Migration Assistant carried forward a lot of old stuff. A few weeks ago I removed old applications that were carried forward and are not compatible with Monterey.

I have not tried running with my external FireWire drives connected because I use them for Time Machine backups and weekly Carbon Copy Cloner backups. The two panic reboots this morning occurred after the iMac was awakened for Saturday morning Carbon Copy Cloner backups and after those backups had completed.

Upon logging onto our 5-week-old iMac this morning, the iMac had a "panic" reboot after entering the password, and then had another after it rebooted.

We have now had three "panic" reboots on our 5-week-old iMac. That's three more than have occurred on our 11-year-old 2011 iMac.

Does Apple have issues either with Monterey or with its M1 Macs (or the combination)?

Have you tried running without the external FireWire drive connected?

disk4 - 1.00 TB

External FireWire Up to 800 Mb/sec

FireWire was another of Apple's "Hype it, then Heave it" initiatives and may not be well-supported in newer macOS version. Easy enough to test.

Look at the install dates for some on the extras. Example:

Internet Plug-ins:

Silverlight: 5.1.50901.0 (? - installed 2017-03-25)

AdobePDFViewerNPAPI: 17.012.20098 (Adobe Systems, Inc. - installed 2021-05-11)

AdobePDFViewer: 21.001.20155 (Adobe Systems, Inc. - installed 2021-05-11)

MeetingJoinPlugin: (? - installed 2017-03-18)

iPhotoPhotocast: 7.0 (Apple - installed 2013-04-20)

SharePointBrowserPlugin: 14.7.7 (? - installed 2017-09-16)

and, in User Launch Agents:

[Not Loaded] GrowlLauncher (App Store - installed 2013-10-30)

Modern Login Item

/Applications/Growl.app/Contents/Library/LoginItems/GrowlLauncher.app

Some are far older than the computer and therefore surely not optimized for Monterey. I suspect they came over because of Migration Assistant. Exactly why I don't use MA. If you still need those, update them, Otherwise evict them.

If those steps don't help, contact Apple SOON for a warranty assessment. KPs can be hardware-related and the usual suspects like loose or incompatible RAM don't; apply to Apple Silicon devices. If you have a hardware fault in that model, only Apple can fixit.

I would recommend un-mounting the Firewire External Hard Disk using Disk Utility and then physically disconnected the firewire (or other cable) from the back of the iMac. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode and then restart normally and test for a couple of weeks with that External Hard Disk disconnected. KP's can be caused by external peripherals. Your FW External Hard Disk may be the culprit, the only way to test it though is to physically disconnect for a period of time to see if the system stabilizes.

Thank you. I'm only suggesting temporarily disconnecting the FW drives for testing. If the problem stays, then I suspect the old FW drives are not a problem. If the problem goes away, you can still reconnect the FW drives until you can get a modern USB3 drive(s) to replace it.

The external drives got my attention because there are reports here of other issues with some external drives and Monterey.

Well played! I do the same except mine is set to do the CCC backups every day about 4AM. When my last iMac decided it was time to shuffle off this mortal coil, it was the CCC backup saved my digital life. I lost nothing.

I have one OWC Mercury Elite Pro USB3 doing TM and a second doing CCC. I bought both as bare drives and installed SATA 6G 7200rpm WD "Black" Series drive in them. Zero issues and the TM backups are fast and unobtrusive.

Allan Jones:

Besides the cost of replacing my existing Firewire 800 drives, I also like the fact that I can daisy-chain my two drives and use just one of my Thunderbolt ports. I see the OWC Mercury Elite Pro has FireWire 800 ports and so could also be daisy-chained, but if the problem--as suggested--is with the FireWire protocol, then that might not help.
