Magic Keyboard freezes up / Monterey, iMac 24".

My magic keyboard stopped working. cannot log into my iMac 24". I plugged it in to recharge, no response. I have iMac24 and Monterey. Everything was fine until ... today. Cannot do SAFE MODE startup as I need keyboard to work properly to hold shift key down during safe mode startup. Still cannot type to log in. Using other devices to ask for help.
