Can someone help me understand which software to download first in order to upgrade to monterey? They all have el capitan in each software, so im having trouble understanding the directions here.

There is your problem Your mac can not run Monterey.
The latest macOS you can run is Catalina macOS 10.15.7 which is still supported (latest update was March 14, 2022)
verify you are using the Safari browser to download/initiate the macOS links.

Sorry, as leroydouglas has already mentioned, your Mac is not compatible with macOS Monterey. The latest it can be upgraded to would be macOS Catalina 10.15.7.
I have os x el capitan, but I am having trouble understanding the directions on how to download the oldest version of monterey? can anybody help me out?
