How to deal with greyed out songs

A couple of days ago I synced my iPhone and Mac's distinct music libraries. Some of the songs have not synced properly across to the Mac and cannot be played on the mac due to their titles being in grey. These songs came to the iphone from CD's so were not downloaded from apple music. They have grey iclouds next to them with a dashed border.

Hi Musicformac,

A cloud icon with a dashed border in Apple Music can mean a few things. In your situation it is likely one of the following:

  • The song you're trying to play is waiting to upload to iCloud Music Library
  • iTunes is unable to match the song with a version available in Apple Music

As these were songs burned from CD's and are greyed out, its most likely iCloud Music Library is unable to match the song for use with the service. Are these songs that won't play personal recordings, or initially copied over from an unofficial source? If so, metadata for those songs is likely missing and why the service can't match it in iCloud Music Library to sync across your devices.

Cheers!
