Can’t message certain people
Why does a friend’s name appear in red and I can’t message them in Messages on ipad

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!If we understand your post correctly, you want to know why a friend's name appears in red and you're unable to message them on your iPad. We'd like to answer that question.
That indicates that the person doesn't have iMessage and that you don't have an iPhone connected to your iPad to allow it to message non-iMessage devices. If you have an iPhone, you can link it to your iPad by going to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and selecting your iPad.
