turn off app store notifications

I have an macbook air running Big Sur and every time I use my computer I get an annoying notification that updates are available for apps I hardly ever use. I cannot turn them off. Why is that? It would be great if Apple would give me to option of not having to click on another item that is not relevant to me.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.6

Unfortunately, the only way to "turn notifications off" is to download and update them. You can turn off Notifications for apps, but not the direct process from Apple for updates. Having said that, you can go to System Preferences > App Store and UNcheck "automatically check for updates", but that is a bad idea. You DO want updates that include security features, so you do want to get those. Depending on the app, there may be baked-in security measures, so you really can't separate them. And, you may still get the notifications.
