Convert HEIC photo format to JPEG and retain original photo info including Date Taken

In the original thread, Russ New Boy wrote:

Within Photos you can simply export the photos you need and choose JPEG as the file format. Within your phone you click the Share button and they will be exported as JPEGs also.

If you don't want to use HEIC format, go to settings on your phone, select Photos and change format to 'Most Compatible'.

RE: To avoid HEIC in the future, I did: Settings > Camera > Formats > set Most Compatible. This worked!

RE: Within Photos ... export the photos ... and choose JPEG as the file format. I did:

Photos > File > Export > Export 'X' Photos > made sure Photo Kind set to JPEG > Export. All pictures are transferred as .jpeg, BUT all have todays date stamp. Not what I want.

RE: Within your phone you click the Share button and they will be exported as JPEGs also.

This must be what I need to do since chrisak08 said it worked for him.

But where is the Share button, and do you set this prior to moving the pictures from iPhone to Mac, or when?

Thanks for help.

There is no way to export photos from Photos and preserve the file creation date an a Mac. The syncing with iCloud will also change the file creation dates with any new download from iCloud. Creating a new version of a file in a different format will create a new file with a new creation date. But the exported JPEG should have preserved the original capture date in the EXIF tags, and any decent photo application will show the correct capture date. When you reimport the exported JPEG to Photos the photo should be showing the correct date in the Info.

If you want to restore the original file creation date or modification date, you may want to use third-party tools, that can copy the capture date to the file creation date. I am using the services from RAW Right Away to modify the file creation date. Or Graphic Converter can do this, also A Better Finder.
