Writing code on iPad

Hello,

I recently started using an iPad (Air 5th gen) as my main device and I cannot seem to do a few VERY basic functions. I need a dev environment and a C++ compiler or a way to virtualize an os that can have those. What is the best way to go about getting these? Is it really not possible to download apps from the web?

Power shouldn’t be an issue considering that my old laptop runs Xcode no problem and is far less powerful.

Thanks,

A

iPad Air, iPadOS 15

Apple offers tooling for developing Swift apps on iPadOS, but anything else is going to be third-party.

Apple limits what additional apps can be developed by third-party folks for use on iPadOS, too.

App distribution is either side-loaded from Xcode, or from the Apple app store, or via Swift Playgrounds.

The C++ development tools for iPadOS are quite limited, AFAIK.

One example: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/c-c-program-compiler/id1160868782

If you need longer run-times or access to various platform features, you’ll need a network connection to and developing your apps on another box (yours or hosted), or similar. Or developing as Apple intends here (past the Swift Playgrounds app) using a Mac with Xcode.
