touch ID disappeared from system preferences

iMac 24-inch M1 2021

Big Sur

touch ID stopped working. In system preferences, the touch ID screen was greyed out.

Upon reboot, touch ID disappeared from system preferences.

How do I restore touch ID to system preferences, and how do I make it work again?

iMac 24″, macOS 11.6
