Did PDFs open in the past on your Word app? If so, the steps here might resolve unexpected issues with third-party apps:

If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

If the issue persists, are you able to open the PDFs on another app such as the Books app?

To open the PDF in Books, tap the PDF attachment to open it, tap , then tap Books.
