Setting up Apple ID on old Iphone

I am having issues setting up icloud on a old iphone that was given to my child. It keeps saying verification failure once I put in the password.

I have checked for updates, done a reset, made sure the time and date were correct and changed wifi. What else can I do?

Each Apple device is linked/associated with an Apple ID of the person who did the setup.

Activation Lock prevents anyone who is not the owner from using this iPhone.

To unlock the Phone, you need the Apple ID and password of the previous owner, that were used during set up.

The previous owner has to read -> this Apple article: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then the previous owner has to remove the iPhone from his/her account, see this Apple article:

After that your child can sign in with his/her Apple ID.
