Swim App not working on Apple Watch

My swim ap was working perfectly for years, from an AW2, then to AW5 until March 2021, then it started. Issuing laps. I looked into the details and it was showing in the ´Auto sets’ a ton of changes and a hole bunch of long rests up to 6 minutes(I swim pretty much nonstop). Last Tues it was actually all correct. Since then it’s been horrible, only catching half the laps, reporting me relax most of the time with small amounts of swimming. It’s gotten worse and worse. I have reset the watch many times. Restarted with no history, everything. I assumed it was the watch, so I bought an AW Se and it was better but still messy when you look at the detail and it missed 18 out of 66 laps. I haven’t changed anything. I was having no issues until the beginning of March, a little at first and now it’s a joke. I’m going to try wiping out the SE and starting from scratch but I’m not confident.

Hello DovercourtPete,

You can use these steps to get better results when swimming:

• Your Apple Watch estimates your measurements during workouts based on the information that you entered during setup. Here's how each workout is measured:

• Pool Swim: When you start a workout, be sure to accurately set the pool length to help your Apple Watch measure laps and distance. GPS isn't used during a Pool Swim, and water might prevent a heart-rate measurement, but calories, laps, and distance will still be tracked using the built-in accelerometer.
• Open Water Swim: GPS will only provide distance when you do a freestyle stroke. Water might prevent a heart-rate measurement, but calories will still be tracked using the built-in accelerometer.

You can find these steps in this article: Swim with your Apple Watch

You also didn't specifically mention if you're are using the Workout app or a third-party app. If this is a third-party app, reach out to developer of the app to make sure the app is still compatible and working as expected with your current model of Apple Watch and current version of watchOS.

Best Regards.

Hello DovercourtPete,

Have you tried calibrating your Apple Watch to see if that helps? If not, you may want to give that a try to see if it helps. You'll find the steps for this process in the following article.

Calibrating your Apple Watch for improved Workout and Activity accuracy

Should you continue to experience issues with it missing laps, then reaching out to Apple Support for additional guidance would be a good idea. You can reach them directly at Get Support.

Best wishes.

so this swim I actually swam all the way through and it missed half of my laughs but you can see it saying that I’m resting most of the time which I was not I didn’t stop at all previously it wouldn’t have shown up properly but lately it is not it’s showing all this resting time and it’s missing a lot of turns. I have used Apple watches for almost 5 years with no problems up until March 1I’m guessing I should erase all my data and start from scratch I even bought a new Apple SE and it continues to be a problem although a little bit less it seems but that was only from two swims

That’s the one thing I haven’t tried even bought a new watch as they were mentioned because I thought the accelerometer might be broken or stuck but the new ones continue even though I started with new data but I’ll try that hopefully that’s it I’m trying to find something wrong before I wipe my phone and watches and start fresh because like I said I have five years of data that which is nice to have it’s gotta be something like that because it’s like I said it recorded my swim is fine before this event is started on March 4 in the morning I have a perfect swim record and then in the afternoon I started to have this problem when she gets bigger and bigger

So, I’m completely fed up with Apple and will never buy a product again. I have spent two months on this, I even bought a new watch that I had to push to return. They ended up saying they couldn’t fix the problem and to just keep updating and maybe one day it would work again?! Ridiculous. It worked for 5 years! Anyways, the call for the return got cut off and they never bothered to call back. So then I spent another hour and a half being bounced from department to department. Finally when I get to the end they tell me I have to find a Fed EX, the worst place, as there isn’t one anywhere near me. I have spent months, got told to buy a new watch, then spent almost a month on this, many, many hours wasted and now two hours wasted on the phone just to make a return. Getting cut off and not called back. I’m thinking of returning the new IPad, not that they care, because I am fed up with this junk. Too bad, I have owned many Apple products for years but I would not recommend them to anyone now. I’m disabled and 8n dialysis and tracking my swimming is important as I train 2 hours a day. What’s more important was all the time they have wasted. I’m in treatment 6 hours a day 5 days a week, minimum and can’t believe how much time was wasted just to return. Done.

So after Apple basically told me that they could not fix the issue because I’m not worth the cost or trouble. I decided, even though I continued for a few more weeks as I was very happy when it worked for over five years, to try competitors watches. Both worked flawlessly without much ado, which makes me wonder why they could not make their expensive tech work. I still have my Five and will check it from time to time but I’m very unhappy with their lazy no care response.
