After several months without any issues, a few weeks ago I started getting this message while working in the editor of a popular website builder. Happens on my MacBook Pro and also my iMac 5K; happens with Safari and with Chrome. The message starts showing up after I've been in the editor about 30 to 90 minutes. At that time there are some funky behaviors, like:

There is an autosave feature in the editor, and if I switch that OFF, the frequency of problems goes down by at least 50%. If I've stepped away from my computer for lunch, or to let the dogs out, I might find a different message, informing me that the page was restarted because it was using too much energy. I've been working with 16GB memory and I'm wondering if upping that to 32GB would be a good solution (of course that's not an option on the MBP). Other specs...

I would be surprised if memory were the limiting factor. 16 GB ought to be more than sufficient, but you can confirm that for yourself by using Activity Monitor: Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. If its unitless "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac would benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't.

If you use any, Safari Extensions may be a factor.

If your Mac is performing poorly in general, please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.

Hi insiderjack,

Are you experiencing this behavior with just this specific website or multiple? Do you get this message when too many tabs are open?

To get started, let's try to force quit Safari, and see if the issue persist afterwards:

How to force an app to quit on your Mac

Also, let's clear Safari cache and cookies by following these steps:

  • Open Safari. On the toolbar on the top, navigate to: Safari > Preferences.
  • Navigate to the Advanced tab and check the box “Show Develop menu in menu bar.”
  • Now select the Develop menu in menu bar and click to Empty Caches.
  • Restart Safari to make sure the cache is clear.

Thanks
