How do you hang up without risking calling someone else?

When using the red "end call" button, if the other person hangs up a split second before you do, the button disappears, and you make a new call to someone whose call info was in the same screen location as the button (if the Phone's Favorites or Recents lists was on the screen before the call).

Is there a way to avoid this? Some configurable delay between the end of a call and the recognition of a subsequent tap on the screen, perhaps?
