Repeating text within notification

For the last month+ (unsure of exact start date), text in notifications repeats partway through the notification. This is usually seen in Outlook mail notifications, but has shown up in others as well (Twitter) but less frequently.

Notification example:

Sender Name

Email Subject

Good Afternoon, Thank you for meeting

with us today. Below is the slide from

us today. Below is the slide from Evan r...

As you can see the last line of the notification repeats much of the text from the previous line.

The actual e-mail starts:

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for meeting with us today. Below is the slide from Evan regarding...

A few observations:

  • Only seems to happen when the subject line is on one line and therefore three lines are available for the message preview. Every example for Outlook that meets these criteria had this issue and the repeat always starts at the beginning of the last line.
  • Only one example for Twitter had this issue with the fourth line. Many Twitter notifications with four lines were fine.
  • No other examples found with other apps. Many notifications aren't as long, but those that are don't have that issue.
  • No apparent 'logic' to how much text repeats. Sometimes it's much less text that repeats, but always on the third line. and always for Outlook.
  • This is a work phone with some things locked down by system admin. However, a few colleagues with iPhones and the Outlook app have not noticed this issue.

Wondering if anyone else has this issue and (preferably) a solution.

Thanks!

Jay

Hi JessS19,

I'm happy I just found this thread, this issue has been a struggle for us the last month. I'm an app developer and I have found exactly how to reproduce this issue. It seems the problem comes from the code that calculates how to truncate the message body within iOS when the body length is too large to be shown and has to be truncated with added ellipsis (...) at the end. The issue only happens when there is one or more line breaks within the message body. It looks like the line breaks mess up the calculation of where to cut off the message, resulting in what you see in the example above.

Can you please bring up that issue to the iOS team? We have had several users complaining about the issue.

FYI we only experienced the issue on the notification screen in iOS, where you can see up to 4 lines of text of the notifications. Also, sometimes some users did not get the issue which I guess is due to the screen sizes being different.

Our app is only online since beginning of May, so I can't really know how new that issue is.

Hope it helps!

Cheers,

Mickaël G.

Hi JayRedE,

As this is a work managed device and you've done a great job isolating the issue have you tried removing the Outlook account and adding it back to test or changing the preview settings?

To help change the preview settings and test, check out the steps in the guide here: Check your email in Mail on iPhone as well as the information here: Change notification settings on iPhone

Additionally, check to see if there are any zoom features or this occurs when the text size is increased. Change the font size on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

We'd also recommend ensuring all apps and the iOS are up to date.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I, too, have a problem with repeating portions of text in my notifications of a new tweet. I tried changing the font size of notifications, but it didn’t help. In further study of this issue, I determined that it only happens in Twitter notifications AND only when the notification is of a retweet. This discovery seems significant, but I don’t know why🤔
