Upgrade iOS on old iPad Air ?

How do I upgrade iOS from 12.5 to higher on my old iPad ? My apps are not opening and I think that is why?

If its a first generation iPad Air from 2013, then you cannot. iOS 12.5.5 is as far as it can update.
