Space Bar issue with Final Cut Pro

I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2019, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) running 12.3.1 Monterey. In FNCP, when I hit the space bar to start and stop the playhead, nothing happens. The J, K, and L keys do work. I have no peripherals running at all. I have a 8 GB of ram, a 250 GB hard drive with only 35 GB available. FNCP is 10.6.1. I am just getting back to FNCP after using another editor for quite a while, and really want this to work as well as possible. I have reset the defaults more than once since I noticed this happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That's strange. Almost like it's an Accessibility option. I searched but couldn't find how to get an enclosing rectangle as you've shown. As Tom asks, please rerun and post a new Etrecheck report.

Have you mapped the spacebar in your FCP keyboard settings? You said you installed a new macOS which I think should get rid of the old FCP prefs, but that's an easy thing to try again. Hold command and option while launching FCP and choose Delete Preferences. It will open the default Untitled library. Re-open the library you were working on and see if there's any difference.

Oh no! You've got CleanMyMac installed. This is generally considered malware around here. I'm sure Luis will chime in with his thoughts on the matter. You should completely uninstall it and then reinstall FCP. It's possible it's damaged your system enough that only a wipe and fresh install will fix it.

Plus you've got many anti-virus packages installed. I think the recommendation is to use just Apple and Malwarebytes that's run on demand, not continuously.

Also looks like you've been upgrading in place for many years since there's a Silverlight plugin which was deprecated many years ago. The fresh install would be a good idea for this too.

And finally, you have Chrome and it's terrible keystone daemons running. See https://chromeisbad.com for instructions on how to completely remove Chrome and the keystone software. Reinstalling FCP after removing these is required.

CMM is apparently very aggressive at removing files it considers unnecessary, but it appears these files are required by FCP. It's done damage to many people's FCP machines that the experts around here (not me) jokingly refer to it as malware.

I've heard that Edge and Brave are browsers that use the same rendering engine as Chrome but do not install the damaging keystone daemons. Be sure to follow the instructions at https://chromeisbad.com to completely remove all traces.

Another thing to try is to reset FCP preferences. Hold command and option while launching and choose Delete Preferences... FCP will open the default Untitled library. Open the library you were working on, set the preferences back to the way you like them and see if the spacebar issue has been fixed.

Report back with your progress and we can further diagnose if you're still having problems.

Wow, that's amazingly fast analysis. I'm very grateful for all of your help. I was not aware that CleanMyMac was considered malware. That's such good advice. Since I have a lot of big video files on my small hard drive, I've always appreciated its ability to help me keep my hard drive relatively unburdened with junk, but I'll take your advice and just do my own junk patrol, unless you have another suggestion.

I just started using Chrome because of one feature it has that I cannot get on Safari, but I must say that this issue definitely did not happen before my use of that special feature on Chrome (and Google Docs). I will uninstall Chrome immediately and will systematically get my MacBook and FCPX to be good friends again.

Okay, I've gone through all the steps in order, eliminating CleanMyMac and Chrome and all contingent files first, then re-installing FCPX and even Monterey next, and that did not correct the space bar issue. I then even went so far as to erase my drive (Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD-Data) after making a Time Machine backup and restoring all. The space bar issue still exists.

I'm not upset about all the time and effort this put me through. I feel it's sort of like an oil change after owning the machine for over two years. But does this mean a visit to the Apple Store for me, or should I just live with it given that my J, K, and L keys work? Or should I think about finding a brand new machine with lots of hard drive space and more RAM?

QuickTime works as expected. But, I've never used QuickLook that I'm aware of, so I tried it, and am not sure I'm doing the right thing. The behavior is not as what I understood it should be. I took a screen shot of what is happening. I've noticed a blue frame thing going on without any apparent function other than outlining the row the file is found in? is this a bug or a new interface feature in Monterey I wasn't aware of?
