If you have an iPhone model that has Face ID, you cannot. You would need to swipe down to access Control Center to view it, or add a battery widget to the Home Screen.

If you have a model that has Touch ID, I haven't had one of those models for years.. there might be a toggle switch in Settings > Battery for showing the battery percentage
