Im planning to upgrade my 2013 iMac with a new SSD driver. Is it a simple fix to improve speed?

Reinstalling onto an external USB 3.0 SSD is a simple fix to improve speeds assuming you currently have just an HDD.

Internal drive upgrades are complicated.

A driver upgrade (software) usually has minimal impact and probably would not be worth the effort.
