How to turn off Safari offering to save the password but still use auto fill with third-party password manager?

I'm using the Strongbox Password Manager and its autofill option — that works nicely for filling in my credentials. But: once I've then click on "login" Safari kicks in and asks whether I'd like to save those credentials (in key chain, I guess).

So: how can I disable Safari being eager to save my creds in key chain and still use Strongbox's autofill integration?

Hi Dirk,

Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities!

We understand that you'd like to disable Keychain on your Mac so that you can use Strongbox Password Manager instead.

You can disable iCloud Keychain in Apple menu  > System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud > Keychain.

No. I'd like to disable Safari asking me to to save a user ID/password after it's been supplied via autofill by the third-party password manager Strongbox.

I do not want to disable iCloud keychain.

Perhaps I need to illustrate the flow:

  • I got to a web page that requires me to provide my user ID and password (let's call them my credentials and use the abbreviation "creds")
  • Clicking into the creds fields I can make use of Strongbox's autofill integration and let Strongbox fill in the creds
  • when I click on the "submit" button, Safari comes along and asks me whether I'd like to
    • store the credentials in keychain, or
    • never do that for this web site

It that last part, Safari asking me whether I'd like to store the credentials that have been supplied via autofill already, which I'd like to disable.
