pmset autostart stays (1) even if changed to (0) in Recovery mode

I´m running an mac pro 2013 on Catalina 10.15.7. (need to stay with this regarding compatibility of some apps).

The mac is always starting once i switch on the electricity. (Recording studio - we need to do that due to some other start up procedure of the whole studio.

Energy save option is set to not start after power - loss.

pmset -g says the following:

Currently in use:

standby       1

Sleep On Power Button 1

womp        0

autorestart     0

hibernatefile    /var/vm/sleepimage powernap      0

gpuswitch      2

networkoversleep  0

disksleep      0

standbydelayhigh  86400

sleep        0

autopoweroffdelay  259200

hibernatemode    0

autopoweroff    1 t

tyskeepawake    1

displaysleep    0

highstandbythreshold 50

standbydelaylow   0

I went into recovery mode and checked the terminal.

There autorestart was showing (1)!!

Changed it there and tried again. The Energy saving panel says Auto restart after power loss YES!!

How would you recommend to fix that?

Best regards for helping me with that in advance!

It drives us nuts, because we really need the mac to start later, after a few other devices booted up properly.

It worked normal for years, suddenly it began to start, once the main-switch was switched on.

There is no message saying "it was restarted because of a problem".

Try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset (hold the PRAM Reset for at least three chimes). Then try reconfiguring the settings if needed. If there is a macOS setting for this, then perhaps the .plist preference file is corrupt in which case you would need to delete the file so macOS can recreate it (or perhaps it will need to be recreated or restored from a backup). You can try deleting the Energy Saver .plist preference file located in "~/Library/Preferences" I believe. Make sure to reboot afterwards in order to use the new default preferences.

It is possible the way you are switching on power is triggering the issue on this Mac. Maybe try disconnecting all external devices to see if the issue occurs when switching power back on for the Mac. If it still occurs, try using another power strip to power on the Mac to see if it is the current power strip.

I don't know about any macOS commands. As long as a default Startup Disk is selected in System Preferences, the system should not be looking for any other bootable volumes. Besides this should not matter if you want the Mac to remain powered off while the peripherals are powered on first.

Thanks a lot for the answer.

Tried that, did not work. Comp starts automatically, once power is connected / switched.

I heard somwhere that some USB - Hubs may cause that, because being recognized as USB - HD with optional system - file on it?

Is there a terminal option to prevent from starting from usb?

Thanks again for helping me out!!

Thanks for your reply.

I doubt that a current Strip could be the issue. But I’ll try…

Regarding the devices, everything worked for years without any problems. The Mac Pro did only start once been switched on with the knob on it, as it should. The issue occurred from one day to another without any knowable reason.

Is there anyone who knows about the possibility to start automatically from a USB - stick, once it has one on it?

Should I post here a start log file so someone could look into and see what’s the reason, starting up automatically?

best regards! Frederic
