I sent a text to a friend. I don’t know if he received it or not because there was a bell with a line through it next to it. Did he receive it?

That means that your notifications are turned on for text messages from that person.

If you tap the bell it will change to a bell with no slash; that means that you won't receive a notification for an incoming message from that person.
