bell with slash through it
I sent a friend a text. It went through but I notice there is a bell with a slash through it next to my message/text. Does this mean his notifications are turned off. Or something else?

That means that your notifications are turned on for text messages from that person.
If you tap the bell it will change to a bell with no slash; that means that you won't receive a notification for an incoming message from that person.
